Chicago summer Weekend road trip to Michigan

Chicago summer Weekend road trip to Michigan

There’s nothing like a summer road trip even if it’s just for a weekend to Michigan. The Midwest is beautiful in the summertime and it’s a great time to hit the road from Chicago to Michigan. In June, we went to the Detroit suburbs, stopped in Ann Arbor, then to Grand Rapids and finally made it home all within 48 hours.

Detroit Suburbs:

We started our trip around 9 am Saturday morning and made it to the Detroit suburbs around 3-4 pm. We stopped at my favorite coffee shop, Biggby – did not know there are some in Indiana. Then, we stopped in at St. Julian Winery & Distillery in Paw Paw, Michigan to pick up a few bottles of wine. I used to lead wine tasting tours in Michigan at Round Barn and St. Julian’s so it was nice to find one on the way. Finally, we got to the hotel. We stayed at the Holiday Inn & Suites Farmington Hills – Detroit NW, an IHG Hotel. This is a newer hotel and is right by the Woodland Hills Nature Park and about a half hour from the Henry Ford Museum. I really enjoyed Farmington Hills – it was so green and had beautiful neighborhoods. We enjoyed a dinner celebration with my family friends.

Ann Arbor, Michigan:

The next morning we slept in a bit and checked out the Woodland Hills Nature Park. It was a few minutes from the hotel and I couldn’t believe a hiking trail was so close. We made our way to Ann Arbor, MI for the best sandwiches in the Midwest – Zingerman’s. It is a cute and super busy deli right in the heart of Ann Arbor. They even have a sign showing the wait for a sandwich, which is about 20 minutes. We got the #73 Tarb’s Tenacious Tenure and the Chicken Salad sandwich. Both were delicious and we enjoyed them on the patio with Zingerman’s homemade soda. It was a beautiful summer’s day and we walked around town and headed west to Grand Rapids.

Grand Rapids, MI:

Our last stop of the trip was Grand Rapids. I went to school here so it was nice to show my husband my college town – even if it was for a quick driveby campus. He loved the tree line campus and could see that that my campus was walkable compared to his university campus in Georgia. I’ll definitely have to come back to show him The BOB and the tire swing. We stopped in nearby Rockford to visit my college friend and her family and then went to a nearby brewery in the woods, Third Nature Brewing Co. It was a great family-friendly area with bags and firepits.

We made it home before 9 pm on Sunday. Unpacked our rental car and got ready for the work week. It was refreshing to enjoy time with friends and get out of the city for a quick summer road trip.
