Ax The Pink Tax Tour Comes to Chicago

Ax The Pink Tax

Being a woman is expensive. We have a lot of up keep from our nail appointments to our bedtime skin routine, but beyond that – we are taxed behind the scenes – without even knowing it!

It’s called the pink tax and you’ve probably been hearing about it a lot from theSkimm or from The Daily Show with Trevor Noah the other night: How The Pink Tax Is Ripping Off Women.

Let’s start with the fact that the pink tax is a gender-based price discrimination. That’s right – it’s discrimination. And it costs women – a lot.

The average woman is charged an extra $1,351 each year on basic goods and services thanks to The Pink Tax.

To raise awareness and ignite change, European Wax Center hit the road to #AxThePinkTax this April and came to Chicago on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 with a comedy show hosted by Man Repeller.

I attended the event at The Robey in Chicago along with about 40 other women and men and let me tell you – their visuals spoke volumes. For instance, they had a display showing that pink bottles are a dollar more expensive than blue bottles.

A dollar may not seem like a lot. But, it’s costing us. And it’s the reason why some women are buying male hygiene products like Oars + Alps, a natural Chicago-based skincare line. Even though the skincare like was designed and marketed for men, the female founders of Oars + Alps discovered that 30 percent of their customers are women, due to the pink tax.

At the Ax The Pink Tax event, the host regularly shared facts about the pink tax including:

On average women pay 7 percent more on goods and services.

This came from the New York City Department is Consumer Affairs study. After comparing 800 products, they discovered how much more women are paying compared to men:

  • 7% more for toys and accessories
  • 4% more for children’s clothing
  • 8% more for adult clothing
  • 13% more for personal care products
  • 8% more for senior/home health care products

There’s a whole website by European Wax Center for you to calculate approximately how much the pink tax has cost you in your lifetime. I calculated mine and discovered that the pink tax has cost me about $39,000.

I love this Ax The Pink Tax Tour because it helps women claim their worth!

So, now you know. How do you feel about the pink tax?

You can do a few things. You can share this article or go to Ax The Pink Tax website and download Instagram graphics to share with your friends and family.
